76 runic inscriptions in the municipality

76 runic inscriptions have been discovered in our municipality. They tell the story of the people who lived in Väsby around a thousand years ago. There are whole runestones or fragments of them, inscriptions on boulders and on flat slabs of rock. On sale at the Information Centre in Väsby Centrum is a booklet about these 76 runic inscriptions, price SEK 25.

Runic inscription on a boulder
Close to the western shores of Edsjön lake beside the track known as ‘kyrkstigen´ (the church path) there is a beautiful inscription on an boulder. It tells of journeys to foreign lands. The Runby and Skälby stones tell the story of bridge building. The most famous of the runic carvers here were Öpir, Fot and Visäte.

Runestone in Oxford
In the gateway into the churchyard at Ed, there is a facsimile of a runestone that was removed and taken to England in 1687. The original is in a museum in Oxford.

Remains around the ancient stronghold at Runsa

Even today, you can still see the remains of the foundations and the mighty walls of the ancient stronghold.

Ship tumulus
Immediately below the stronghold is a 56 metre long and 16 metre wide ship tumulus. It forms part of a burial ground dating from 400 - 500 AD. Opinion is divided but it is believed that it was here that the people from the ancient stronghold buried their dead.

Wolf pit
There are Iron Age graves here with a huge mound, a few large cairns and the ship tumulus. The 4 metre deep wolf pit still remains intact.

The ancient stronghold of Runsa
On a headland high above the surface of the bay lies the ancient stronghold of Runsa. This is where the ruling family of the district lived in the middle of the Iron Age, 300-500 BC
